[None of it is anything he'd care to speak aloud, he realizes. A belated understanding that has him second guessing his decision to seek out Hux in the first place (what had he hoped to find? To accomplish - already knowing full well that the past is anything but capable of being changed?).

But he possesses more than just the ability to speak, and he has come this far - to turn his back and leave would be a show of weakness, of frailty, and already he stands upon the precipice of it, slipping with every second. So instead Ren reaches for Hux within that narrow space, baring the full depth of his failure: his conflict with Ahsoka, Avera 9, Cathaway's stern instruction in the wake of it, how tired she'd been - how little she cared for his platitudes or promises - the conversation with Nathaniel that followed, sparking a rage Ren couldn't suppress and leading to him damaging the station itself. The way she'd barred him from her only a moment later, rejecting his straining grasp.

Sam reaching to establish a personal connection, leaning on the inherent trust that the symbiotic link within a brood provides, only later attempting to cow Ren by twisting the knife regarding Cathaway's disappointment. A vulnerability he clearly learned of, recognized and employed without a second thought.

That Sam's knowledge of it functioning as a pressure point was a direct result of Hux offering it up freely doesn't occur to Kylo Ren. Steve had witnessed it, after all, when Hux employed it on Avera 9.
