CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: General Armitage Hux
Canon: Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Canon Point: End of the film (after the destruction of Starkiller Base).
Appearance: Pictured left
Age: 34
Setting: Star Wars Wiki || Force Awakens Wiki
History: Regrettably, not much is known about Hux's history in terms of his younger years. What has been revealed, however, is that he's the son of Commandant Brendol Hux, who served under the previous Empire. His father was in charge of training all the cadets at the Galactic Empire's officer academy, located on Arkanis in the Outer Rim. Brendol Hux believed in the strong overcoming the weak, natural selection, and that coddling would result in a fractured "herd" (what he referred his troops as). It is also Brendol Hux that first came up with the idea of training Stormtroopers from the time they were young all the way up to adulthood, as he found the Clone army lacking. General Hux follows this line of thought and brings it to true action during his term in the First Order, thus his Stormtroopers are all "raised" this way.
Beyond what his past was like, his timeline in the movie is somewhat short. He first shows after Poe Dameron is captured and Ren gives him the information he retrieved from the interrogation of the rebel pilot. After, he appears to give the orders to shoot down the traitorous FN-2187 and the escaping Poe. He sends troops out to check the wreckage and later has a tense conversation with Kylo Ren about the retrieval of the BB-8 droid.
Afterwards, he tells Snoke he takes responsibility for not retrieving the map and then is enabled to use the powerful weapon installed in Starkiller. This means he destroys the Hosnian system soon after, making a radical speech about the destruction of the New Republic. Later, he seems to just show up to taunt Ren (in front of Snoke) about the Force-user's failure to get the map to Luke Skywalker.
The last time he's seen is when Starkiller is crumbling and he tells the Supreme Leader of the events. Snoke sends him to get Kylo Ren and bring him to him so he can complete his training.
Personality: On first glance, General Hux embodies the First Order. Strict, commanding, and driven, he is exactly the personality type that a military body would do well with. He believes in the what the First Order is after– bringing order and organization to the chaos the New Republic left behind (supposedly)– and will do all he can to see it come to pass. Utilizing his intelligence, ambition, self-control, and talent for strategy, he's managed to get to the rank of General at a relatively young age. Although, underneath of this cool-headed exterior is someone who is extremely passionate about his cause.
As mentioned before, the thing people see first is Hux's cold outer shell. When Kylo Ren speaks to him after the interrogation with Poe Dameron, the General is standing outside, waiting for news. His posture is straight and his expression is carefully composed. The news he receives is less than stellar, but he makes a swift decision to chase after the information needed. It's a short reply, though there's a few things driving it. For one, a sense of pride that's being tested, as well as a calculating mind behind that. Neither Kylo Ren nor Hux are particularly glad for the situation they're in, though he isn't going to really let that show on his face. There's no waste of time, either, as he sets off to command his troops to do exactly what needs to be done in order to retrieve the map from the droid.
His control and pride are tested again after Poe Dameron escapes with the help of FN-2187 (Finn). Right after, he's running names through the trooper database, already having pinpointed that Poe was able to leave due to a betrayal in the ranks. He sounds irritated here, possibly annoyed at a few things even if he holds it in well– the fact that the highly trained troopers have the possibility to defect, that they've just lost hold of the Resistance's best pilot and a resource of information. Hux does not like to lose, especially not when it involves things he's had a more direct hand in. Ren informs him that it was FN-2187 and Hux proceeds as usual (though somewhat unnerved, not that he'll really show this), ruthlessly ordering those under his command to fire on the ship that Poe Dameron and FN-2187 are on.
In the meantime, he checks in with Phasma, going over FN-2187's service record. Considering that Hux had a large part in getting the trooper program off the ground, he's very invested in the status of how the troops are doing. How they were, how they currently are, what their trajectories are. This is no different for FN-2187, even if he's a traitor. It's this part of Hux that's so completely analytical– in the Before The Awakening novelization, he nearly ignores the concerning behaviors of the very same FN-2187 in favor of how great his trooper performance is. Numbers and data mean a lot to him as they're something he can factor in and control. After he gets his report from Phasma, he receives the news that the rogue ship has been shot down and orders a squad to be sent to inspect the wreckage. He isn't going to dirty his own hands in looking for FN-2187 and he feels he is absolute in his command on the Finalizer.
After this, he's confronted by Kylo Ren, who is badgering him about getting the droid. Coolly, factually, and prideful, he argues over their orders. That Snoke wants the map or he wants it destroyed. Ren puts pressure on Hux and insults his troopers, which is where more of his earlier temper can be seen. With a measured anger, he tells Kylo Ren not to insult his men because they're trained from birth, that he believes them to be basically perfect (extreme pride, since again he believes so deeply in the program). In the script, it's shown he retorts "with vitriol" and his inner thoughts lean towards "you son of a bitch" in response to Kylo Ren's taunts and insinuations. However, even though at the end of their conversation he essentially gets threatened, he doesn't back down. Instead, he's visibly holding in his fury, jaw clenching and tight lipped when Ren stalks away.
Something that sticks out most in this exchange is the struggle for power. With Hux being General, he technically assumes the highest position on the ship (aside from Snoke). Kylo Ren doesn't necessarily have a rank in the hierarchy of the military operation, but he still has so much command. It's illustrated in such a short scene that the two of them are at odds in how to achieve their goals; compromise is not on the table. Hux wants the power and Kylo Ren does too, without having to bow to one or the other to make concessions. This aligns with Hux's own personal ascent to the top of the ranks, where he's worked hard to become General at such a young age. It shows he doesn't want to just stop there– in his wiki entry, it's stated he wants to be emperor and believes it's just a matter of time before that happens.
Later, after they fail to retrieve the droid (and FN-2187 and Rey), there's a brief meeting with Snoke in the holo chamber. Hux, surprisingly, is attempting to take full responsibility of losing the droid. What could be gleaned from this is his strict adherence to rules and order and that he isn't afraid to own up to his own faults. Snoke silences him, but afterwards, Hux is able to inform the Supreme Leader that the weapon on Starkiller is ready to be used to take out the Republic. He's granted permission to use the weapon and it's noted in the script that he exits completely proud and cocksure.
When he's next seen, it's giving a speech to platoons of First Order troopers while on a platform backed by banners. The speech itself is denouncing the New Republic and proudly (fanatically) declaring it's the last day the Republic will stand. Here is basically where we get to see so much more of what's underneath the cold exterior since Hux is worked up by the end of the speech. Completely passionate about his beliefs. When Starkiller fires on the Hosnian system, we're given a glimpse of the arcing light reflected on Hux's face and he honestly couldn't look happier.
However, in a complete switch, Hux's triumph is stolen right out from under him later. After the oscillator fails, the planet that Starkiller is built on starts to shake apart since there's no stabilization anymore. During the destruction, Hux runs into the holo room where he meets with Snoke. Their exchange is different, not only because the planet is falling apart, but also because Hux is without his pride. His voice almost seems to quiver with a fear or grief. The script notes he's heartsick and horrified, though it seems to be through some ingrained sense of control that he manages to keep it together in front of the Supreme Leader. He's able to take Snoke's orders and leaves to complete them.
Essentially, Hux is everything that the Empire was built on before and that the First Order continues forward with. He's cunning, ruthless, calculating, ambitious, and mostly in control of himself as well as his crew. Although, there are peeks of more rampant emotion underneath the composed exterior that show up from time to time. Mostly anger but as shown in the last scene with him, a sense of defeat and the acknowledgment of it.
Canon Abilities/Skills: Very skilled in strategy, basic combat training (simulation based/theoretical). Can fire a blaster and presumably knows how to pilot or has light knowledge of things required to run a ship the size of the Finalizer. Otherwise, a basic human.
ON STATION 72
Symbiote Specialization: Rho
Symbiote Ability:
Empathetic Connection
level 1: Passive. Emotional feedback can be sensed from anyone he comes within a relative distance of (50km for brood members, 25km for non-brood and outsiders). As the feedback is overwhelming, he is prone to nosebleeds and splitting headaches.
level 2: In addition to having an expanded reach (quadruples previous range) of feedback, he is able to project his emotions onto someone else (or a small group). The downside is the emotion(s) he is overriding will transfer to him, essentially making it an exchange. Re-centering himself can take up to two hours.
level 3: Farther reach (distance moderately negated as long as the being is in the same atmospheric circle) and larger groups can be affected. Unlike the previous level, he is no longer projecting his emotion but instead enhancing the hidden or subtle emotions of others to gain a different response or outcome. The person or persons will not feel as though the emotion came from the outside but that they had a surging change from within. After use, he is overwhelmed to the point that coming back to himself is a struggle and can take a varying amount of time to recover.
Inventory: First Order regulation dress blacks, greatcoat, command cap, blaster, tracker.

Rescue Write-up:
[ The planet is shaking apart. It's impossible to ignore, even if it weren't his failure that brought about the destruction. Even if he hadn't watched Starkiller be built, piece by piece, over a period of years.
Even if he didn't feel like he was going to collapse with the base. Bow inwards and wait out the abyss that would consume him and this place. Except he doesn't have the chance to do so. No honorable death of a General going down with his command. He has his orders from Snoke, had half hoped the Supreme Leader just told him to do what he needed to do.
Instead, he's amidst the crumbling pieces of landscape, eyes flicking to the screen he has in his palm. Constantly readjusting his hold and his attention as he pinpoints the faint blip of red. The small marker that tells him Kylo Ren is out here, close by. Coldly, he thinks it would be better if he were dead too. Then he wouldn't have to go back and face Snoke (or his losses). Underfoot, the ground lurches enough for him to speed up his strides, snow kicking up in his wake. Finally, he reaches where the tracker and his search coincide, glance grazing over the prone body ahead. Tracker is dumped into one of his large pockets as he hurries over, kneeling on the ground with one knee next to Ren.
He's a contrast, he thinks. Stark white against the deep blacks of his robes, his hair. The violent streak of red slashed across his face almost matches the First Order and Hux has a brief moment of admiration. Then he leans down, manages to haul Ren to a sitting position. Blood smears along the toe of his boot from the puddle in the snow and he withholds a swear. There's a deep, rattling groan from the Force-user and eventually, through some push and pull, Hux is able to get him up on wobbly legs. Ren leans heavy against him, the two inches of height making themselves known in the awkward hobble away from where he'd been laying on the ground.
Half dragging the other man to the nearby shuttle, he doesn't think of much, just focuses on getting out of this place. Tries not to think about how they could so easily be dragged under. Or how much he might want it to happen.
Thankfully (or is it thanklessly?), they make it to the shuttle. Ren sits heavily on the standard built-in medical cot. Hux gives orders to one of the pilots he'd managed to grab on his way out of the hangar. Immediate take off, destined for the Finalizer. Engines roar to life and he feels a strange weight in stomach. It comes right before there's a heavy crash against the outside, shuttle tipping; he grabs hold of the edge of a counter, other palm out to catch Ren just in case he fell forward. Everything shudders. ]
General, there's debris on the wing, it's weighing us down.
[ One pilot appears in the doorway of the shuttle, just before exiting the cockpit. Without permission, they remove their helmet and Hux doesn't think those eyes are necessarily human. Maybe none of it is human. Is he going crazy? ] I can get us off the planet, but it's risky. Do you–
[ There's not another thought, he really doesn't want to die, even if he thought he did earlier. ]
Yes. Whatever it is, do it.
